A critical pedestrian thoroughfare in Spokane visits
The University District Gateway Bridge connects Spokane’s South University District with the campuses of Washington State University, Whitworth University, Eastern Washington University, and Gonzaga University.
The robust details of this 450-foot span bridge were inspired by traditional railyard bridges, while the 120-foot tall concrete arch establishes the bridge as an iconic and significant landmark on Spokane’s skyline.
The bridge deck is suspended from the arch with thick steel cables and stout connectors, creating a visual counterpoint to the graceful curve of the bone-white arch. The sturdy 10-foot-high throw barrier required by the railroad completes the composition.
At night, BEGA high-performance floodlights and programmable, color-changing LED systems illuminate the iconic bridge, enhancing its visibility from throughout the city. The railing along the bridge is lined with over 50 BEGA linear ceiling and wall luminaires, which create warm pools of light along the pathway.
BEGA light building elements create comfortable, even illumination on the landings, and safely lighting the stairways and bicycle ramps on both sides of the bridge.
