State-of-the-art research hospital for UC San Diego School of Medicine
The fluid shape of the UCSD Jacobs Medical Center continues to change when viewed from any perspective on the hospital’s campus. CannonDesign created this unique architecture based foremost on the design of these carefully planned patient units. Advanced computer modeling helped the firm to maximize views and daylight, while minimizing solar heat gain and glare.
This 12 story, 509,500 sq. ft. building opened to the public in 2016. Housing 245 patient beds, each room includes floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize daylight and promote healing. Capabilities of the $943 million complex include advanced surgical care, a cancer center, women and infants care, and cardiac rehabilitation center. More than a decade of planning and construction has led to a place of groundbreaking research, paired with exceptional patient care.
A highlight of the patient care experience at the Jacobs Medical Center is the beautifully landscaped courtyards and walking paths which provide a serene escape for patients and their friends and families. BEGA bollards line the many paved and gravel walking paths around the campus. Additionally, Light Building Elements light the main entrances to the state-of-the-art facility.
