St. Petersburg’s primary retail, dining and entertainment center

Sundial, brought to life in 2011, is St. Petersburg’s primary retail, dining and entertainment center right in the heart of downtown. The structure is primarily mediterranean and floridian style, bringing together clean white stone and light stucco with custom stainless steel railings outfitted with steel cables. To highlight the architecture, BEGA wall sconces featuring a dual up/down distribution are installed throughout the space. Strategically placed, they transform each multi-story column from a plain building section into an elegant artistic flourish.

The central courtyard is the site’s namesake. The centerpiece is a 28’ tall sundial, mosaic lagoon and fountain designed by Emmy Award-winning production designer René Lagler. Within the fountain live a family of life-sized bronze dolphins sculpted by local artist Mark Aeling. During the hot and sunny Florida days, giant, tree-like umbrellas unfold to provide shade to shoppers.

Careful attention to each small detail is apparent in this close-up of the fountain wall, especially in the rustic stone floor and intricate tiling work. Small scale BEGA recessed step lights are used as indicator lights around the base of the fountain. They add a little pool of light, drawing your eyes to the fountain, without detracting from the overall aesthetic.
