Smart and sustainable company headquarters
A miniature smart city is the goal for Siemens new company headquarters just outside of Vienna, Austria. As a world leader in smart grid providers, Siemens was looking to create a place where they can easily test out new technologies such as intelligent traffic solutions, green buildings, water management systems, and constantly expanding smart grid infrastructure. The new campus includes apartments, offices and a massive business, science, and training center. Half of the the grounds are also reserved for public open spaces such as parks and walking trails.
Sustainability is a core value of the company, which is evident through everything they do and produce, including their facilities and architecture. This LEED Gold Certified facility uses BEGA luminaires for energy efficient, high-quality light sources throughout the campus. Light Building Elements with an asymmetric flat beam distribution line the main entrance drive set between two sharply angled wings of the building. Adjustable in-grade luminaires light trees in this courtyard and uplight the white entrance canopy over the main doors. Pathways around the campus are illuminated by sleek BEGA bollards with internal louvers that direct light downward onto the ground, without causing glare for pedestrians.
Rectangular BEGA recessed wall luminaires were used in a vertical orientation on the spiral staircase which extends the entire height of the main atrium. These luminaires light both the stairs and opposite white wall which reflects most of the light resulting in a brightly lit, uniform passageway. The glowing white wall of the spiral staircase is visible through the buildings’ glass facade and draws attention to this architectural element. The same lighting technique with a slightly larger scale version of these recessed wall luminaires is also used in the vertical orientation around exterior plazas.
A large ground floor common area with a glass roof receives ample daylight but is illuminated by wall mounted BEGA floodlights at night. Elevator lobbies and breakout meeting areas throughout the building maintain crisp white finished with bright pops of color in the form of accent walls and modern furniture. These finishes are enhanced by comfortable illumination from BEGA’s elegant and slim opal glass ceiling luminaires.
