A well-lit university campus
San Diego State University is a public research university with roughly 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Just minutes away from downtown San Diego, the Pacific Ocean, and the mountains, SDSU has a beautiful campus with a true Southern California feel. Various BEGA exterior products can be found all throughout the large campus including pole top and wall luminaires, as well as bollards and floodlights.
Two styles of pole top luminaires are used to illuminate the campus. Indirect, adjustable pole top luminaires are tilted 30° to create an asymmetric light distribution. Fully shielded, asymmetric wide beam fixtures illuminate other walkways between classrooms and large plazas. Entrances to nearby buildings are lit with complementary wall luminaires with a forward throw distribution. Round BEGA surface wall luminaires are centered between arches, both highlighting the architecture by day and lighting an exterior stairwell by night. A custom paint finish on these half shielded fixtures was chosen to complement the light tan, concrete structure that they are mounted on.
Walkways, plazas, and stairways around campus are also lit by BEGA recessed wall luminaires. Round styles in both large and small sizes are used to provide some extra task lighting on ground surfaces, while rectangular styles mark significant staircases and create interesting accent lighting. A large shade structure in a landscaped courtyard is supported by a grid of columns with lines of light on each face created by stainless steel recessed luminaires. The shade during the day and high light levels at night make this space perfect for gathering at all times of day.
Large-scale floodlights are mounted to the edge of a significant pedestrian bridge to illuminate the impressive suspension structure. Glare shields are used on these high output fixtures to prevent any direct views of the light source by pedestrians crossing the bridge or cars belows.
