A relaxing beachfront hotel
The newly redesigned Plunge Beach Hotel in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Florida is home to the only ‘toes in the sand’ bar in town. With 163 guest rooms and a priceless location, this hotel is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail with friends, borrow a bike to explore the area, or do absolutely nothing at all. A coffee shop, restaurant, bar, and beachfront pool are all conveniently located on the property.
While the location is excellent for tourists, beachfront properties can be life threatening for the world’s second largest Loggerhead Turtle population which is found in this area. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission works diligently to protect the sea turtles by mapping nest locations, setting up protective barriers, and requiring compliance with specific lighting guidelines.
When baby sea turtles hatch on the beach, they make their way to the ocean by following the reflection of the moon and starlight off of the water. With the ever-growing population and consequent addition of artificial lighting, sea turtles become disoriented and head inland towards the brighter lights rather than towards the ocean. Narrow bandwidth amber light sources are not visible to sea turtles, which is why guidelines have been put in place requiring specific LED sources in many beachside locations.
A wide variety of BEGA luminaires are available with an amber LED option to meet these guidelines. Fully shielded recessed wall luminaires and bollards in two heights were chosen to light the pathways at the Plunge Beach Hotel. The warm glow of amber light provides a lighting solution which is safe for both hotel guests and the area’s wildlife.
