Oklahoma City lighting master plan

Oklahoma City is a sprawling community generally associated with big-box architecture and large chain stores. The concept of boutique shopping was fairly foreign until recently. However, that image was changed thanks to Project 180.

Today, Oklahoma City is flooded with a renewed emphasis on architecture and design. The downtown area is currently home to an expanding population that regularly gathers for cultural events including art exhibits, independent-film screenings, and live musical performances. In response to the bustling energy downtown, Project 180 sought to redevelop over 180 acres of the city to be more pedestrian-friendly. All one-way streets were converted to two-way, and curbside parking spots, bicycle lanes, landscaping, lighting, and other amenities were added.

According to Jeff Speck, author of Walkable City, “Of the automobile-oriented cities in which I’ve been working, none has made such a dramatic commitment to reorganizing its street structure around welcoming pedestrians and bicycles in the way Oklahoma City has.”

Hundreds of BEGA luminaires were specified for Project 180. Pole top luminaires illuminate downtown city streets, Thunder Dome, the Skydance Pedestrian Bridge, and the City Bombing Memorial. Wide beam pole top luminaires provide attractive and efficient lighting due to LED low power consumption properties. Other features that sparkle in the Oklahoma City night sky are the Myriad Botanical Gardens and Children’s Park.

A standout landmark for OKC is the Devon Tower Business Building where BEGA LED light building elements are used as an integral part of its design to create pillars of light to illuminate the street & sidewalk, while visually guiding visitors towards the main entrance.

The city’s BEGA luminaire fixtures were initially specified with metal halide bulbs but have since then been retrofitted with LED bulbs to help the city meet sustainable energy goals and decrease maintenance costs.
