An innovatory space in the heart of the Boston University Charles River campus

The Joan and Edgar Booth Theatre at Boston University (BU) provides theater students with countless opportunities to experiment and innovate, while taking their audience on a journey to another world.

With a goal of relocating the theater arts back on to the BU campus, the Booth Theatre was designed to include an outdoor arts plaza to offer both an indoor and outdoor stage for the performing arts. Elegantly lit by BEGA luminaires, the plaza can also be used as a seasonal outdoor event space.

With its modern glass façade and unique landscape architecture, the project required a sleek and architecturally neutral lighting solution for general illumination: BEGA building elements. To add depth and drama to the space, compact floodlights were used to uplight trees within the plaza.

Bollards line the pathways on either side of the theater and provide 180-degree light distribution.

With efficient light fixtures, occupancy sensors, and energy recovery units, the project was awarded the LEED Silver Certification for sustainability, among its receipt of many other honor awards for design excellence.
