From the city to the "Nordkette"
When visiting the historic city of Innsbruck, there’s no better way to take in the beautiful scenery than the Hungerburgbahn funicular railway. Cable cars take visitors and locals alike from the city center up the mountain landscape to various, popular attractions. The route takes passengers across an impressive cable-stayed bridge spanning the Inn River, and up to the highest peak of the Norkette mountain chain.
Stations along this railway were designed by Zaha Hadid architects to symbolize the surrounding scenery of glaciers and snow capped mountains. These ice-blue, organic structures cover the passenger platforms at each stop. The iconic stations are illuminated for safety and wayfinding by BEGA recessed wall luminaires. BEGA in-ground floodlights were chosen to uplight the glass canopies to help them shine both day and night, while also providing a comfortable glow of ambient lighting.
Additional large-scale BEGA floodlights highlight the structure of the railways unique bridge at the edge of town, whose concrete towers are reminiscent of the stone mountain peaks in the distance. The experience of riding the Hungerburgbahn funicular leaves a lasting impression from one’s arrival at the main station, all the way to the Nordkette’s tallest peak.
