Leading sustainable building design by example

The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) leads by example with a learning center which educates visitors about the benefits of environmentally-conscious design. As the first LEED Platinum building in Orange County, the ENC utilizes innovative building technologies to provide a healthier indoor environment for the occupants through sustainable design.

Solar power, natural ventilation, and water use reduction strategies minimize the environmental impact of this 8,500 square-foot facility. Recycled and recyclable materials were used extensively in the construction, including insulation made of recycled blue jeans, and composite wood for the exterior skin made from sawdust and natural resin.

The exterior lighting earned the project a LEED credit for light pollution reduction. BEGA bollards, pole top luminaires, and step lights were utilized to create a polished and sustainable site lighting design. Horizontal louver bollards with symmetric, 360° light distribution blend perfectly into the footprint of the ENC. Pole top luminaires with asymmetric, wide spread distribution illuminate the parking lot, while energy efficient step lights guide visitors to the main entrance.
