Illumination design for safety and elegance
A new public safety facility in the heart of Brentwood, Tennessee, allowed the Brentwood Police Department to consolidate into their own dedicated facility which is more centrally located to their community. This facility is an example of a complex building which aggregates a variety of users and space types into a consolidated and clearly organized environment.
The building houses offices, break areas, and locker rooms as well as training areas, investigative labs and operations, and 911 dispatch center. The public is welcomed into the building through a secure public lobby.
Much of the building serves the Brentwood Police with departmental offices and modern laboratory environments offering new investigative capabilities. The training classroom, defensive tactics spaces, virtual scenario simulation, and firearms range are resources for Brentwood and other area agencies.
An entirely new emergency call center was integrated on the upper level with room to expand for the coming decades. Last, an ancillary structure on the ground serves as a new emergency rescue site for a team of first responders and their ambulance.
The facility’s exterior lighting was carefully designed with the goal of creating a warm and inviting public facing facade visible from the interstate as well as from the public parking. With safety a top concern, impact-rated bollards were used to provide vehicular protection for the main entrance without forming a pedestrian barrier. In-grade luminaires installed at the staff entry side of the building elegantly highlight the staff memorial, and a life size bronze statue of a lion; both serve as visual reminders to staff of their roles to protect and serve the community in which they serve. Additional in-grades illuminate the American flag during the night.
