A biophilic workspace designed to spark creativity and innovation

An award-winning project representing outstanding design and innovation, The Amazon Spheres feature a multi-level, glass-enclosed workspace containing 40,000 plants and trees sourced from over 30 countries around the world. In collaboration with Amazon, architectural firm NBBJ designed The Spheres as the centerpiece of the new Amazon headquarters in Seattle, Washington. After six years of planning and construction, The Spheres was officially opened and ready for use in January 2018.

The Spheres offer a unique workplace experience where Amazon employees are surrounded by plants and natural light. This connection to nature creates a harmonious work environment that fosters productivity, concentration, and creativity. The type of glass used for the façade’s 2,643 panes of glass was carefully chosen for maximum light entry while rejecting heat absorption in order to create an ideal atmosphere where plants would flourish.

Timeless luminaires enhance interior and exterior spaces

Illuminating The Spheres was complex and required detailed planning. Lighting design firm WSP Global collaborated with the entire project team to create an environment bright enough for equatorial plants while maintaining lower light levels that resemble a relaxing, resort-style experience. Designers and architects trusted BEGA luminaires to illuminate this awe-inspiring project throughout the interior and exterior.

Inside The Spheres, BEGA compact floodlights with 360-degree glare shields highlight vine-wrapped columns, accentuating the impressive height in the space. Additional floodlights were used to illuminate the live plant walls throughout The Spheres. The most extraordinary part: a central meeting area on the upper deck featuring over 30 pendant luminaires from the LIMBURG Collection feels like a whimsical rainforest above the clouds.

On the exterior, BEGA pole-top luminaires line the pathways, creating safe, comfortable illumination. Benches lined with recessed wall luminaires provide a spacious outdoor gathering area in the courtyard. Because of their innovative features and timeless design, BEGA luminaires effortlessly illuminate this high-profile headquarters and will continue to enhance Amazon's workplace experience for years to come.
