An innovative optical technology

A luminaire’s light distribution should complement the form of the space that it is illuminating. While the majority of building geometries are rectangular, many luminaires create a circular pattern of light. BEGA’s vortex reflector changes the norm by creating a uniquely square light distribution on the ground plane.

Engineered for Optics

There are times when creating a rhythm of scallops on a wall, or pools of light on the floor, is the intended design approach. However, when a designer is looking to achieve uniform light on a plane, our innovative BEGA vortex optics® make this possible. As illustrated below, a typical wide beam downlight will create tall scallops on a wall, while a narrow beam downlight creates bright pools of light on the floor.

BEGA’s vortex downlight avoids creating scallops on the wall, and still achieves excellent uniformity at the ground plane. These optical properties are excellent for canopies and passageways, as well as wide open spaces such as atriums and lobbies.

High Efficacy with Superior Optical Control

Rather than a standard parabolic reflector which was initially designed around an omnidirectional lamp, this reflector aims to optimize the flux output from a small, flat LED source. The patent pending vortex technology rotates a parabolic reflector around the vertical axis to form a complex vortex shape.

The geometry of this reflector enables light to make contact with a larger portion of the reflective surface than a traditional parabolic reflector in combination with an LED source.

The depth and details of this reflector are suited perfectly for each diode, blocking direct views of the light source. This ingenious design balances high efficacy with superior optical control, while minimizing glare and eliminating shadows and artifacts in the distribution.
